The landlord or the tenant must know their legal guide line with regards to rent increase for their residential unit. The rent increase for the residential tenancy in Ontario is based on the Ontario Consumer Price Index, a measure of inflation calculated monthly by Statistics Canada that reflects economic conditions over the past year. The rent increase varies year to year as the inflation rate changes. The changes are measured by Statistics Canada and published. The rate of inflation determines the rent increase for each year.

As such, the rent increase for the year 2017 is based on the inflation rate is determined at 1.5%. However; the landlord who wishes to increase the rent beyond the guide line shall seek leave from the Landlord and Tenant Board prior to rent increase.
